Keynote: The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly
Anirban Basu, Chief Construction Economist, Marcum LLP
Has the Federal Reserve successfully engineered a soft landing? Or, is the confluence of geopolitical conflict, a presidential election, rising consumer debt levels, and still high interest rates conspiring to produce economic downturn in 2024? It is difficult to know whether 2024 will be a good year – but one thing is clear – it will be a very interesting one. This presentation will supply in-depth analysis of major factors shaping economic outcomes, including interest rates, global conflict, wage dynamics, business confidence, and demographics. It will then turn toward a forecast for the coming year, highlighting the major risks that economic stakeholders will likely encounter.

American Business Bank
Inspired by the philosophy that a Bank could be more than the sum of its siloed parts, our founders set out to build a new kind of Bank; one that worked as a singular entity, acting as a complete banker on behalf of its clients — in 1998 American Business Bank was born. Unlike their mega-corporate counterparts, our founders recognized that middle market companies were in need of bankers that could do more for their business, so ABB took action, fostering long-lasting relationships with businesses across the southland. Today, that genuine interest and passion remains the driving force of our success, and it’s how we continue to build a legacy that quietly influences the way premier Southern California businesses operate and grow for years to come.

ABC Southern California
The Southern California chapter of Associated Builders and Contractors, Inc. was founded in May 1974, by a group of construction professionals. Seeking to form an organization to give voice to their unique concerns within the construction industry, ABC Southern California was built on the following principles:
- “To train employees for careers in construction and to forward the education of personnel in every phase of the industry.”
- “To restore the Construction industry to its traditional status of free enterprise for the benefit of the American People.”
- “To participate to the best of our ability in preserving the American way of life through a strong free market economy.”
Even in its early days, the Chapter proved to be a beacon of support for construction professionals committed to excellence. Their focus is to ensure free and fair marketplaces, improve the industry through education and training, raise the professional level of contractors through continued education, implement safety programs that benefit the entire industry and preserve the free enterprise system. In addition to their commitment to continually add value to the Chapter membership, ABC Southern California has grown, and continues to grow, into one of the most respected business organizations in the region. The Chapter is recognized as one of the strongest and most effective Training Chapters among ABC’s 68 Chapters nationwide.
